F&M Picnic (cont.)

As mentioned in the other article in this edition, Ada’s Farmers & Merchants Picnic might not only be the longest consecutive running yearly festival in Ohio; but more: it might be one of the most diverse festivals in the state of Ohio! Besides a Kid’s Pet Parade (How often to you see that?); over the years there have been band concerts in the Band Shell; 4-H events galore; a Horse Pull that, in modern times, has morphed into a Tractor Pull with HUGE amounts of ‘horse’ power; a Vegetable Contest; a Flower Contest; Church booths; Civic Group booths; and more food trucks than you can shake one of those cotton candy cones at. The Ada Herald noted that in 1939, some 5,000 people attended the F&M Picnic, “…justifying its reputation of being one of the biggest town and country gatherings in the state.” For the Rotary Club’s “Youth Group,” back in the day at the Picnic, there was a 50-Word Essay Contest revolving around why: “Farmers should improve livestock strains.” Alice Romick won the first of these contests in 1950.
