The Parkway Lady Panthers strolled into McGuffey to face Upper Scioto Valley in a non-league contest Monday night, and gave the Lady Rams a run for their money. The lead traded hands several times during the final period, and USV pulled away in the final 55 seconds of the game to clinch the win, 57-52.
USV improves to 11-6 while Parkway slips to 8-9. "We knew they were a tough team from the MAC," said Ram Head Coach Mike Risner. "They have a tough schedule."
Both teams were coming off of a long hiatus due to weather, and Coach Risner said "we were fortunate to hang on...we were a little out of sync." Risner said the girls only had an hour of practice since their win last Thursday over Ridgemont. "Our passing and our timing wasn't there," he added.
Panther Head Coach Adrian Jazwiecki praised the Lady Rams for their offensive moves, and noted that her squad did not see many shooting opportunities in the second half.
Panther Becca Harshman struck first by sinking the ball within 30 seconds of the opening whistle. The first period was a see saw battle as each team shook off the rust. Some errant passing in the opening stanza by the Lady Rams kept them from dominating the period, and USV only led by three at the beginning of the second.
Parkway scored in eight seconds of the second period start, when Danielle Matthews canned a jumper. Tara Luth scored moments later to get within one, but Ram senior Katie Hicks nailed a triple to keep the lead. Things heated up as both teams began stealing the ball from each other, but they rarely resulted in points. Parkway did manage to get a five point lead at the end of the first half, but a roll around the rim that finally fell in by USV's Mikayla Coburn cut the Panther lead to three at halftime.
Both teams kept it close for the remainder of the contest. Parkway was leading by two at the end of the third, but it was the last time they would hold the edge. USV slowly gained ground on the Panthers, going from a six point lead back down to one, and then canned six free throws in the final minute to secure the win. "We battled back. I was pleased the girls were able to hang tough," Risner said.
Risner also noted that senior Emily Coburn was a "spark" off the bench. Leading the Lady Rams in scoring was Hicks with 21, while Whitney Carroll earned 16. Ginnie Critten grabbed six rebounds, while Kayla Prater had five.
Coach Risner also noted that 11 of the team's 19 turnovers were in the first half, so that major improvement was made in the final two periods in controlling the ball.
USV: Conley 1, Hunsicker 2, Carroll 16, M. Coburn 6, Hicks 21, Prater 5, Critten 2, E. Coburn 4. Three-pointers: Hicks (3).
Parkway: Luth 9, Shellabarger 7, Burtch 6, B. Harshman 8, Bates 2, H. Harshman 6, Matthews 11, Crawford 3. Three-pointers: Shellabarger.

The USV reserves also won over the Panthers, 45-21.
USV will play a rescheduled game with Waynesfield-Goshen on Thursday night. The league contest is one of three remaining games for the Lady Rams before sectionals. "We want to finish strong," said Coach Risner. "It's been hectic with no school...we need to get back into our routine."
"They are the number one seed in our sectional," Risner concluded. "We'll have our hands full, but it's our final home game, so we want to win it for our seniors."
