By Cort Reynolds Ada Herald Writer
WAYNESFIELD - It was a battle of attrition between Ada and the Waynesfield-Goshen girls basketball teams Saturday afternoon.
Ultimately, the host Lady Tigers outlasted and outscored Ada 11-0 in the second overtime to pull out a draining 74-63 non-league win. Three Lady Bulldogs fouled out and two others were close to disqualification when the marathon finally ended.
Waynesfield freshman Katie Patton scored six of her game-high 24 points early in the second overtime to seal the verdict. The Tigers, who struggled mightily from the foul line all game, made five of six free tosses in the second extra session to help win the physical bout.
The Tigers improved to 8-6 with the win while Ada dropped to 7-8 with the gut-wrenching loss.
Waynesfield led most of the way but six Malary Dumbaugh free throws in the fourth quarter gave Ada its first lead since the opening minute at 46-45. Dumbaugh then fouled out on a driving shot but the Bulldogs still managed to extend their biggest lead to 56-51 on a Lindsay Simmons triple.
The Tigers clawed back by pounding the offensive boards and making three of six foul shots. A putback off her own miss by 6-2 W-G post Brooke Shaw with a minute left tied it 58-all. The hosts committed a turnover after running most of the final seconds waiting for the last shot, and Ada missed a last-second shot to force the first OT.
Simmons fouled out and Ivy Horn made two foul shots to give W-G a 60-58 edge. Tabbi Jolliff tied it on a jump shot with 2:33 to go, but the speedy Horn's driving shot put the hosts back in front. Jolliff then became the third Adaite to foul out and Patton made one of two free shots to make it 63-60.
However, Ada freshman guard Taylor Willeke tied it again on a long trey with 33 ticks to go, necessitating the second extra session. The Tigers then seized the early lead as Patton scored two baskets and two free throws, and W-G held the Bulldogs scoreless in double OT to post the hard-fought victory.
Waynesfield jumped in front 8-3 and rode an 8-0 spurt to a 16-5 bulge. Ada deployed a zone defense to try and limit the big Shaw, but she managed three early field goals and Dumbaugh was whistled for three fouls. Yet Bulldog senior Nikki Grzybowski nailed a triple to bring the visitors within 16-9 at the first quarter break.
Jolliff then caught fire in the second stanza, scoring all 12 of Ada's points. The smooth sophomore knocked down two treys and three two-point goals, but Patton scored nine points herself in the period to keep the Bulldogs down 27-21 at intermission.
Willeke canned a basket to start the third quarter, but Dumbaugh picked up her fourth foul. Horn scored on a fast break layup, a drive and an inside basket to give W-G a 35-25 cushion.
But Grzybowski then drained her second trey to start an Ada rally. Sam Fell converted an old-fashioned three-point play, then sank three free throws to pull the Bulldogs within 37-34.
Horn scored on another drive, yet Grzybowski responded again with a three-pointer with a minute left in the period. Horn and Fell each scored eight points in the period as Ada headed into the fourth quarter with the momentum down only 41-37.
Grzybowski's fourth three-point goal of the game tied it 41-41 with 7:14 left in regulation. Waynesfield inched ahead 45-41 before Dumbaugh drained four consecutive foul shots to tie it again. Ada pulled in front by three, but moments later the momentum switched once more when Dumbaugh's potential three-point play was waved off for a charging call that sent her to the sidelines.
Grzybowski led Ada with a season-high 15 points on four triples. Jolliff scored 14, 12 of which came in the second period. Fell and Willeke each contributed 11 points and Dumbaugh added nine.
Horn netted 19 points and Shaw added 16 for the Tigers.
W-G converted just 19 of 39 (49 percent) at the charity stripe. Ada hit on 75 percent of its foul shots (18-24), but took 15 less attempts. No Tigers fouled out, although Shaw and Horn each had four personals and the hosts lost sparkplug playmaker Shelby Gilroy in the first quarter with a bruised thigh.
The Bulldogs canned nine three-point goals.
