Balanced attack leads ONU women over John Carroll

By Andrew Korba

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Seven of the 10 players to see action scored at least seven points to lead the Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 78-63 victory over John Carroll Saturday afternoon at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Ohio Northern improves to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while John Carroll falls to 8-7, 5-4.

Freshman Joanna Snyder led Northern with 15 points off the bench while junior Jeanne Bockey scored 13 points.

Sophomore Steph Hicks had a season high 12 points and also grabbed a season high nine rebounds.

The Polar Bears used an early 12-2 run to open up a 17-9 lead with 9:03 left in the first half. During the stretch, Northern got five points from Snyder, three points from Hicks and two points each from Bockey and sophomore Megan Porter.

Northern continued its balanced play throughout the first half and took a 33-26 lead into halftime.

Ohio Northern controlled the boards in the first half holding a 35-22 advantage and grabbing 16 offensive rebounds.

The Polar Bears began the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 42-28 lead with 15:57 remaining. Baskets by freshman Morgan Dumbaugh, freshman Katie Mengos, junior Brittany Bogart and sophomore Kara Dysert allowed Northern to expand their lead.

John Carroll would chip away at the lead and cut the deficit to 51-43 with 11:39 remaining on a 3-pointer by Kate Mahoney.

Northern would respond immediately with a 6-0 run to push the lead back out to 57-43 with 10:17 left in the game. Hicks scored four points and Snyder added a basket to spark the run.

The Polar Bears would hold their lead thanks to 5-of-5 free throw shooting in the last two minutes.

"Today was a good win for us" said head coach Michele Durand. "We came with the mentality to try and slow down John Carroll's offense and our zone defense definitely did. We were able to control the boards which allowed us to control the game."

Northern finished 28-of-70 (40 percent) from the field and 4-of-13 from behind the arc. John Carroll would finish 25-of-74 (34 percent) from the field and 7-of-26 on 3-pointers.

ONU would also finish with a 53-42 advantage on the boards.

The Polar Bears will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Westerville to play Otterbein. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
