By Virginia Bandy Ada Herald Editor
The USV Rams had a double upset last weekend, losing to league foe Waynesfield-Goshen on Friday, and hosting the Cory Rawson Hornets on Saturday, who pulled off a one-point win, 33-32. Even a late comeback for the Rams couldn't push them over the top. Their record drops to 1-9 (1-1 NWCC).
Head Coach Aaron Thompson said "with a short bench and back to back nights," he had players who stepped up and played more minutes than normal for the team.
It was the little things, he said, that added up to the unfortunate loss. "That extra turnover, that missed free throw, that time we didn't get back on defense," Coach Thompson explained.
Senior post Ryan Sparkman showed a new confidence on the court, and led the Rams in scoring with 14. Colby Salyer earned 11 points. "We got some good shots in the post," Coach Thompson noted. "He's (Ryan) got a nice touch on him."
The Hornets scored first in the game, and built up an 8-0 lead before Salyer would feed the ball to Sparkman under the basket for the first Ram markers. Senior Rhys Rose hit the hoop, and then Hornet John Anderson nailed a jumper while getting fouled, earning another point. Cory Rawson hit a dry spell for over two minutes as Brett Wodarski, Sparkman and Salyer scored enough to equal the Hornets at 11 each. It was at the buzzer that Mark Inbody hit the hoop to take the slim two-point lead.
"I thought we did a nice job of recognizing some of their shooters," he continued, adding that his squad shut down Cory's Anderson after the first quarter. "We kept battling," he concluded.
Salyer opened the second period with a basket to tie up the game again, but Hornet Kyle Sprosty nailed a trey to take the lead right back. Inbody hit two back to back to widen the gap and it took 2:30 for USV to get back to the hoop. Sparkman then cleaned up two miscues from team mates for the putback scores. The teams went into the locker rooms with Cory leading 22-17.
USV climbed back into the game in the third. Sparkman made the first move with a basket, which was answered by Hornet Anderson with a three-pointer. C-R wouldn't score again for almost five minutes as USV continued to hit the mark. Salyer and Sparkman scored two more baskets, but it was a trey by Rose that put the Rams on top for the first time in the game, 26-25. Salyer laid in another ball to increase the lead to 28-25, but the Hornets scored twice more to overtake USV at the buzzer, 29-28.
Both teams kept the scoring to a minimum in the fourth, with consistently missed shots and errors in dribbling. Salyer and Sparkman scored once each, but missed free throws by Salyer and Brandon Overs could have made the difference. The only Hornet who saw the basket in the fourth quarter was Jeremiah Alspach, who scored twice and missed his charity tosses as well.
USV: Rhys Rose 5, Brett Wodarski 2, Colby Salyer 11, Ryan Sparkman 14. Three-pointers: Rose (1). The Rams were only 1 of 9 at the line.
C-R: John Anderson 11, Mark Inbody 8, Jeremiah Alspach 7, Kyle Sprosty 3, David Hector 2, #34 2. Three-pointers: Anderson (2), Alspach (1), Sprosty (1). The Hornets were 1 of 5 at the charity stripe.
