The USV Lady Rams hosted the New Knoxville Rangers on Saturday afternoon for a non-league battle and kept an early lead to secure the victory, 48-39. The Lady Rams improve to 8-4 (1-2 NWCC).
Head Coach Mike Risner said his team was exhausted from a 36 minute game on Thursday night with Riverside. Katie Hicks, who had played all 36 minutes of that game, was given as many breaks as possible according to Risner. "Other people stepped up. Shelby Conley had her best game of the year. (Ginnie) Critten helped us inside on the boards, too."
The Lady Rams started the game intensely enough, matching the scrappiness of the Lady Rangers. Both teams were blocking passes and stealing the ball at every opportunity, but the USV girls connected with the hoop more, leading 12-4 at the end of the first period.
USV continued to outscore NK in the second period, 16-11, as the Lady Rangers attempted a comeback at the hoop. USV took advantage of the long passing style of NK, opening the stanza with three consecutive steals. Two of those steals turned into points, with Critten and Whitney Carroll draining their shots. After two back to back NK misses, USV stole the ball again, and Carroll executed another easy layup. With a minute and a half to go before halftime, New Knoxville's head coach Tim Hegemier uttered a profanity after a referee's call and got himself a technical foul. Carroll nailed two free throws as a result. No other shots hit the mark before the buzzer, and the teams went into the locker room with USV on top 28-15.
"I told the girls they would make a run at us," said Coach Risner. The Lady Rangers scored more in the second half than they did in the first, but it was not enough to overcome the USV lead. Risner said that his girls had "no legs" in the second half, still tired from the Riverside game.
"We couldn't move like we normally do," he noted.
Still, the Lady Rams held their own, only slightly outscored in the second half, 12-11 and 12-9. USV was 11 of 19 at the charity stripe while the Lady Rangers were 13 of 21. Turnovers were high for the Rams, at 24, but luckily they rarely turned into points for NK.
USV: Shelby Conley 8, Morgan Hunsicker 1, Whitney Carroll 18, Katie Hicks 10, Ginnie Critten 9. Three-pointers: Conley (1), Carroll (2).
NK: Taylor Arnett 3, Olivia Meyer 7, Taylor Elshoff 10, Katie Phillips 4, Haley Dillon 6, Tiana Heidt 9. Three-pointers: Meyer (2).
