| 1/17/2010 8:48:00 PM | Email this article Print this article | League win slips away from USV girls in overtime The USV girls traveled to league leader Riverside on Thursday night and fought hard late in the game, only to have the win slip away in overtime, 61-60. The Lady Rams' record became 7-4 (1-2 NWCC) with the loss. Riverside retained its conference status of number one at 3-0, tied with Fairbanks.
The Lady Rams, who were led by senior Katie Hicks with 27 points, started slowly in the contest, only scoring three points in the first period. The tables turned in the second period, when Hicks and company began sinking shots, and outscored Riverside 19-8, to shorten the Pirates' lead to 24-22 at halftime.
Riverside was still in the lead, 39-33 going into the last stanza, where Hicks scored 10 points and Whitney Carroll nailed two three-pointers to help tie up the game at 56-56. The Pirates then outscored USV in overtime by one point to retain the win.
"We had to battle back the whole night," said Head Coach Mike Risner. "Riverside is a good team. It was a tough loss in the conference."
USV: Whitney Carroll 18, Mikayla Coburn 8, Katie Hicks 27, Kayla Prater 1, Ginnie Critten 6. Three-pointers: Carroll (4), Hicks (2). Coburn led in defensive rebounds with eight and Critten earned seven. Hicks executed five steals in the game. Carroll and Morgan Hunsicker each had five assists.
Riverside: Brooklyn Purtee 7, Sarah Schindewolf 6, Erica Snapp 13, Brittany Shough 6, Whitney Jenkins 7, Abby Heaberlin 7, Amelia Carter 15. Three-pointers: Jenkins (2), Schindewolf (1). Carter led the Pirates with 16 total rebounds and five steals. Heaberlin had six rebounds and six steals. Jenkins led in assists with seven.

The Riverside JV team was defeated by USV, 42-23. The junior Lady Rams were led by freshman Maura Griesheimer with 17 points.
