ONU women extend winning streak to five

By Andrew Korba

ADA - The Ohio Northern women's basketball team made seven of its first 10 shots and its first four 3-pointers to help the Polar Bears pick up a 73-63 victory over Wilmington Wednesday night at the ONU Sports Center.

With the victory the Polar Bears extend their winning streak to five games and improve to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Quakers fall to 6-7, 2-3.

Freshman Morgan Dumbaugh led Northern in scoring with 18 points. She also had three assists and four rebounds.

Sophomore Megan Porter added 13 points off the bench thanks to 5-of-6 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from long distance. Junior Jeanne Bockey also added nine points and nine rebounds.

Porter hit a 3-pointer at the 15:14 mark in the first half to give ONU its first double-digit lead of the game at 15-3.

With the score 19-6 just a few minutes later, Porter hit another jumper from beyond the arc before freshman Katelyn Jones added a bucket to put the Polar Bears up 24-6 and give them their largest lead of the contest with 12:24 remaining in the half.

The Quakers cut the lead to 36-28 at the half and would chip away at the lead all night, cutting the lead to 63-56 with 2:09 remaining.

Northern shot 10-of-12 from the charity stripe down the stretch to put the game away.

"This was a nice home victory for us tonight," said head coach Michele Durand. "The hot start definitely put a dagger in them. We have had a history of not putting Wilmington away, but tonight we sustained their runs to hold the lead. "

Ohio Northern shot 22-of-57 (38.6 percent) from the field and 8-of-20 (40.0 percent) from 3-point range. Wilmington was 21-of-59 (35.6 percent) from the field and 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) on three pointers.

The rebounding was even with both teams grabbing 40 on the night.

Senior Kortney Kin was dominant in the paint and posted a double-double with 29 points and 14 rebounds to lead Wilmington.

Ohio Northern will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Marietta. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
