Lady Rams can't overcome Recker and Lady Rockets

PANDORA - The Lady Rams traveled to the Launch Pad last Wednesday night, and were outmatched by the Lady Rockets of Pandora-Gilboa. The non-league contest ended with P-G on top, 65-42, which dropped USV to a 4-3 record. P-G improves to 5-1.

"We knew this was one of the best Division IV teams in the area," said USV Head Coach Mike Risner. "We had a slow start but then found out we could play with them."

USV wasn't totally shut out of the game, even though the first period was dominated by Pandora. Stephanie Recker, Taylor Hermiller and Samantha Schmenk hit basket after basket, to build up a 24-11 lead. The Lady Rams got it together in the second period, as the Rockets lost their shooting touch, and USV began hitting the hoop. USV outscored the Lady Rockets 11-4 in the second stanza, but P-G held their lead, 28-22, at the half.

In the third period, Recker took the ball inside for a run of baskets. Coach Risner noted that she is a versatile player, and is able to play many positions. Recker was in a high post position in the third, and USV had problems defending against her. "She went wild there for a little bit," Risner said. "They're a tough team to defend."

Hermiller scored within 15 seconds of the third period start. USV tried in vain to catch up to the Rockets. Everytime the Rams got within five or six points, the Rockets would step it up and widen the lead.

The final period saw USV lose their shooting prowess against P-G, with Critten scoring the lone basket for the team. The other five markers came from the free throw line, with Hicks and Prater shooting five of six at the line during the fourth.

"We're not happy but we'll take some positives out of this," Coach Risner said.

Point leaders for the game were Lady Rockets' Hermiller with 18, Recker with 17 and Luginbill with 12. For USV, Hicks earned 12, and Carroll canned 11.

USV: Morgan Hunsicker 4, Whitney Carroll 11, Mikayla Coburn 4, Katie Hicks 12, Kayla Prater 5, and Ginnie Critten 6. Three-pointers: Carroll (3), Hicks (1), and Coburn (1).

P-G: Samantha Schmenk 7, Taylor Hermiller 18, Stephanie Recker 17, Galina Schniegenberg 5, Leah Luginbill 12, and Kristyn Hovest 6. Three-pointers: Recker (2), Schmenk (1), Hermiller (1), Schniegenberg (1).

The USV JV girls won over Pandora 28-19.

USV will host Allen East on Wednesday, Dec. 30, who were successful over Hardin Northern recently. The Lady Mustangs came from behind to win that contest. Coach Risner noted that AE has improved since the two teams scrimmaged in November. "We'll have our hands full if we don't take care of the ball," concluded Risner.
