| 9/27/2009 9:39:00 AM | Email this article Print this article | USV holds Fighting Irish at bay The USV Rams continued their winning ways after a homecoming win over Ridgemont by traveling to Marion Catholic and defeating the Fighting Irish 40-10. The Rams improve to 4-1 with the victory.
With twice as many interceptions and fumbles as the Rams, Marion Catholic allowed USV to strike first, with two touchdown passes by quarterback Rhys Rose in the first quarter. The first pass connected to Brett Wodarski, and the second was to Brandon Overs. The Fighting Irish finally scored in the last minute and a half of the quarter, with quarterback Marco Comianos passing to Evan Rimoldi. With a failed two-point conversion, the score stood at 14-6 after one stanza.
The second quarter belonged to the Rams as Rose passed to Steven LaRue from eight yards out. Then an interception by Brian Roberts resulted in a 78-yard touchdown sprint.
After halftime, Rose found a new receiver, and passed to Chris Rogers for yet another tally. MC responded with Comianos driving the ball into the end zone himself from the one yard line.
Another late score by the Rams was made by Rose running for 51 yards. A successful two-point conversion was completed by Rose to give USV a substantial lead after the third quarter, 40-12.
The Rams couldn't score again in the contest, but the Fighting Irish tried to regain some ground by picking off a USV pass and returning it for 15 yards and then completing a two-point conversion. Without another successful drive, the game ended with the Rams on top, 40-20.
USV had 369 total yards, with 263 in passing and 106 in rushing, compared to MC's total of 213, and a deficit of 57 in rushing. Ram quarterback Rose was 22 of 40 for 260 yards. Rose also led in rushing, with 93 yards. Wodarski earned 83 yards in receiving, with Overs gaining 68.
