By Cort Reynolds Ada Herald Writer
RIDGEWAY - The Ada baseball squad scored in every inning to earn its first win of 2009 with an 18-6 thumping of county rival Ridgemont on the road Tuesday.
The run-rule shortened, five inning victory was also the first in the Ada tenure of new head coach Ben Thaxton, who was 10-10 at Bluffton in 2007 in his only previous season. He served as an assistant at Ada last spring.
"It feels good to get the first win," Thaxton said. "It was also good to see our improvement from the first game to the next. We still have things to work on, but we did a good job.
"We were more aggressive at the plate, on the bases and in the field."
Senior right-hander Matt Flower was the winning pitcher. He struck out five and scattered four hits in a shortened complete-game performance.
Flower walked only one Gopher and gave up three earned runs.
"Matt threw a nice game," Thaxton noted.
Caleb Duffy led the Bulldog offense with two singles and six runs batted in. Tyler Simons batted 2-2 with three runs and four stolen bases. Cody Mattson added an RBI double in the first inning for the lone extra base hit of the game.
Ada jumped on top with four runs in the first frame and never was headed. The first batter of the game walked, Mattson doubled him in and Simmons followed with an RBI single to break the game open early.
The 'Dogs plated at least four runs in each of the first four frames. Ada knocked out 10 hits and drew seven walks in the win. Duffy smacked two-run singles in both the second and third innings. He later added a bases-loaded walk and an RBI groundout.
Ridgemont dropped to 0-1 with the defeat.
