Mustangs gain revenge over USV

By Virginia Bandy
Ada Herald Editor

Chris Cockerell and the Mustang squad exacted their revenge on the USV Rams Tuesday night at the first round of sectionals. The Mustangs handed USV a 54-35 defeat to move on to Friday's game with Temple Christian.

Coach Cockerell explained, "We're not the same team as in the beginning of the year, and they beat us in December, but we totally outplayed them tonight. When you have a chance to win a sectional title, it gives the kids something to look forward to. They also wanted another chance at Temple, who beat us in a close one earlier this year. I think that's why they came out and played hard."

The coaches traded compliments about each other's teams. Coach Cockerell said, "The first time we played them, they killed us on the boards, and tonight we did a good job of making the shots inside. I thought his kids played hard, too."

USV Head Coach Mike Bollinger noted that "Allen East has improved; we covered their good guys, and then Truex and Hollar scored, who usually don't score. I give credit to Chris Cockerell; he's in a tough conference. We'll see what they're made out of when they face Temple Christian Friday."

Allen East held the Rams to single digit scoring in the first three quarters, and both teams saw missed baskets and unforced turnovers due to clumsy mistakes.

EJ Laing was high scorer again for the Mustangs with 13 points. Blake Truex followed with 11 and Casey Rex earned 10.

3-pointers: JJ Hollar (2), Laing (1), Truex (1).

Leading the Rams in scoring was Derek Mullett who scored four treys in the contest. Tommy Prater netted nine for the team.

Coach Bollinger lamented that "It's been sliding downhill for half the season; I didn't get through to these kids. I had kids refuse to go into the game for me, and you can't have that. This program needs to win and the next guy can't turn it around in a year. I've got a bunch of good kids who don't want to play hard."

Allen East vs. Spencerville Feb. 27

In their final regular season game last week, Allen East fell to Spencerville 75-45.

Only up by eight points at the half, Spencerville came out and dominated the final stanzas of the league game.

EJ Laing was top scorer for the Mustangs with 17, while Greg Patterson earned 14 and Casey Rex netted eight points.

3-pointers: Laing (3), Patterson (2).
