Rams end season with win and loss

By Virginia Bandy
Ada Herald Editor

The USV Rams went 1-1 in their last two regular season games, with a 12-point win over Ridgemont, 64-52, and then suffered a loss to Arlington, 60-24. The Rams end the regular season at 4-16 (2-5 NWCC).

Ridgemont kept the lead over the Rams for the first half but third quarter play lifted the Rams to the top and they held on until the end of the contest. Turnovers plagued the Gophers, who had 22 compared to USV's 12.

USV Head Coach Mike Bollinger explained that the squad "got off to a slow start: down two at halftime. We came out and had a good third quarter and took the lead. It was a game I thought we could win and they played well. If teams don't pressure us, it gives us an opportunity to do something."

Earning 14 points for the Rams were Derek Mullett and Tommy Prater. Colby Salyers netted 12 and Steven LaRue made nine.

3-pointers: Mullett (4), Brian Roberts (1).

Top scorer for Ridgemont was Shane Moore with 17 while David Shroyer earned 10.

3-pointers: Shroyer (2) and Scott (1).

The Ram junior varsity was also successful against the Gophers, 51-26.

Vs. Arlington Feb. 26:

Before the last home game for USV, the parents of all players were recognized, and the two senior cheerleaders and two senior basketball players were honored as well. They were: Danielle Brown, daughter of Esky and Sue Daniels; Tawney Thacker, daughter of Rina Thacker; Jacob Shaw, son of Alan and Lisa Shaw; and Jake Nelson, son of Lisa and Jim Hites and Shawn Nelson.

Arlington 60-24 over USV.

Junior Tommy Prater scored an early opening basket for the Rams, but the Red Devils racked up nine points before Tommy netted another late in the first. A last minute trey by Derek Mullett ended the quarter 15-7 with Arlington on top. Missed shots and stolen balls that didn't result in baskets led to the low scoring second quarter where Arlington led 9-5 and the Red Devils went into halftime with double the points of USV, 24-12.

The second half was all about Arlington. In the third, they kept the Rams to only two points until the last two minutes, when Rhys Rose finally landed one for the team. In the fourth, Arlington again capitalized on stolen balls and succeeded in the end, 60-24.

Coach Bollinger was pleased that the team scored baskets right off the bat instead of falling behind and he was pleased with the opening defense. "But we couldn't finish some shots and it really hurt us. We had some looks and we went to the guy who we thought would score and they didn't. Once you fall behind six, and then it goes to ten and then fifteen; these guys aren't tough enough to handle that," he commented. "It's a snowball effect on this team. I thought we were compatible with them (Arlington) and we just couldn't do anything."

Leading the Rams in points with six each were Derek Mullett and Tommy Prater.

3-pointers: Mullett (2), Brian Roberts (1), and Dylan Shepherd (1).

Being the last regular season game, Coach Bollinger said "I wanted to make sure everyone got to play." Both seniors on the team, Jake Nelson and Jacob Shaw, were among the starters.

Top scorer for the Red Devils was 6'6" Kevin Rogers with 17, followed by Damin Oman with 13 and Zane Leonard with seven.

3-pointers: Rogers (1), Oman (1), Leonard (1) and Chris Bils (1).
