By Virginia Bandy

Against Marion Catholic, the USV girls dominated in every quarter of the game, and even prevented any scoring from the Irish in the fourth. Katie Hicks was leading scorer for the Lady Rams with 18 and she was 9 of 10 at the free throw line.

Whitney Carroll earned 14 while Paige Mullins scored 12.

Every Ram played and scored in the game: Mikayla Coburn and Rachel Jeffers each had seven, Ginnie Critten scored four, and with two apiece were Shelby Conley, Morgan Hunsicker, and Emily Coburn.

Four team members scored three-pointers: Carroll (4), M. Coburn (1), Hicks (1), and Mullins (2).

The USV junior varsity squad also prevailed over Marion Catholic, 31-16, with Kayla Prater scoring the most points with 12.

In the win over Spencerville, both Katie Hicks and Rachel Jeffers earned double-doubles. Hicks netted 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Jeffers scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Whitney Carroll, who earned 10 points for her team, made back to back treys in the first quarter, which helped USV gain an early lead on the Bearcats. The second quarter, a low scoring one for both squads, had several calls on Spencerville for traveling, and the head coach, Mary Ann Swartz, was warned by the referee for her comments on the calls made.

The fourth quarter saw bad passing from both teams, and there were no points scored until 4:25 left when Morgan Hunsicker was fouled and made two free throws. Spencerville was held to four points in the fourth.

"The girls came out on fire...and then we lost intensity," said USV Head Coach Brenda Mullins. "In the third quarter, we started to pick it up again."

"I need every kid to play hard," she continued. "it was a typical Saturday afternoon game...but we got out of there with a win."

USV 3-pointers: Carroll (2) and Hicks (1).

Top scorer for Spencerville was Brittany Kill with 13, with Devon Keysor earning eight. Kill made the only three pointers for the Lady Bearcats with three.
