By Cort Reynolds Ada Herald Writer
Waynesfield had a chance to tie late when Shelby Gilroy launched a three-pointer with 20 seconds left, but the shot sailed long and Sam Fell pulled down a key rebound for the victors.
Lady Bulldog freshman Tabby Jolliff then netted two clutch foul shots with 14.3 seconds left to clinch the much-needed win.
Ada improved to 6-7 with the win, while Waynesfield fell to 7-8.
"We made Shaw earn her points," said Lady Bulldog coach Neal Dumbaugh, referring to Tiger 6-1 post Brooke Shaw, who scored 15. "Malary played a heck of a game defensively against her, and she got some huge offensive rebounds."
Leading by three points, Ada made its decisive run to start the third period. Fell nailed a 14-footer, followed by a Grzybowski three-pointer and a pull-up baseline jumper by Morgan Dumbaugh for a 26-18 edge.
Moments later Dumbaugh scored on a stickback and sister Malary added a follow basket of her own for a 10-point bulge. Amanda Fullom swished a 16-footer from the circle and Ada had its largest cushion at 32-20.
But just as things were starting to appear in hand, adversity struck when Morgan Dumbaugh and Fell each picked up their fourth fouls just 35 seconds apart. The Lady Bulldogs went into a semi-delay game, but with their top two scorers on the bench scrappy Waynesfield clawed its way back in the contest.
The Tigers inched within 32-26 after three periods with a 6-0 run. Jolliff and Fell each made layups off nice Morgan Dumbaugh feeds to start the final stanza, but Waynesfield kept the pressure on and rallied within 36-32.
Two foul shots by Malary Dumbaugh pushed the margin back to six, but Shelby Gilroy countered with a 12-footer. Morgan canned two free tosses, yet Ivy Horn converted a driving three-point play that cut the deficit to 40-37.
After Grzybowski split a pair of charity stripers, Gilroy sliced the margin to two on a running banker with 99 seconds to go.
Morgan Dumbaugh then hit two free throws and Malary added one, and Ada dodged a bullet when Gilroy's tying trey try was off target.
"I thought another key to the game was Amanda Fullom running the point to start the second half," noted coach Dumbaugh. "She did a nice job for several possessions."
The game did not start well for the winners, however. Waynesfield jumped in front 6-0 and Ada did not score until Fell converted a layup off a steal and fullcourt drive 3:26 into play.
The Tigers moved in front 10-4 as Shaw scored nine early points inside despite a swarming Lady Bulldog defense.
Morgan Dumbaugh gave the Bulldogs a boost when she canned a 22-foot right wing trey at the buzzer to cut the deficit in half at 10-7 after one quarter.
Malary Dumbaugh kept Ada close with consecutive baskets to start the second quarter. Fell drained a banker off a Morgan assist and the hosts took their first lead on a Malary free throw, followed by a steal and layup by Fell at 17-14.
Grzybowski swished a 17-footer to give Ada a 19-16 edge heading to intermission as they out-pointed the visitors 12-6 in the momentum-changing second stanza.
Morgan Dumbaugh led Ada with 13 points and four assists. Malary contributed 10 points while Fell added 10 markers and six steals.
