ADA - Freshman Morgan Dumbaugh scored a career-high 27 points, but it was not enough as the Ohio Northern women's basketball team fell 78-76 in overtime Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.
Ohio Northern falls to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Mount Union remains undefeated at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the OAC.
Dumbaugh scored her 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. She also finished with three assists, another new career-high.
Sophomore Kara Dysert added 15 points and had seven rebounds.
Junior Jeanne Bockey battled foul trouble all game but managed to finish with 11 points and five rebounds.
The Polar Bears controlled most of the first half and took a 36-28 lead into the break.
The Purple Raiders came out of the locker room and cut the lead to six points, but Northern responded with an 8-2 run. Baskets by Dumbaugh, freshman Katie Mengos and Dysert gave Northern their first double-digit lead at 46-36 with 15:26 to play.
Mount Union trimmed the deficit to five with 7:30 remaining Ohio Northern responded with baskets by Bockey and Dumbaugh to push the lead back to nine.
Tessa Pohovey cut the Polar Bear lead to three on two free-throws with 1:59 remaining, and a steal and layup by Rosa LaMattina allowed Mount Union to cut the lead to 64-63 with 1:37 left.
After each team failed to score on their next possessions, Dumbaugh made the front end of her one-and-one to put the Bears up 65-63 with 1:02 remaining.
The Purple Raiders tied the game on a jumper by Pohovey with 54 seconds left.
Dumbaugh would then hit a 6-foot jumper to allow Northern to take the lead 67-65 with 26 seconds remaining. Pohovey would then answer with a jumper with seven seconds to knot things up at 67 and force overtime.
In overtime, both team exchanged baskets and saw a 71-71 tie with 2:30 left.
Dysert would then give the Bears a two-point lead on a jumper and Mount Union responded with a basket by LaMattina to tie the game at 73.
Northern could not score on its next possession and Mount Union grabbed a 75-73 lead on a Lauren Forquer layup with 1:31 left to play.
Ohio Northern could not score on its next two possessions and LaMattina would make one free throw and miss her second but Forquer would grab the rebound off of the miss. Amanda Rose converted two free throws to put Mount Union up 78-73 with 10 seconds left.
Mengos would reply with a three to make it a 78-76 game with 4.2 remaining.
A turnover by Mount Union on the ensuing inbounds pass allowed Northern get possession back. Dysert's attempt to tie the game was tipped and Mengos' put back was blocked allowing Mount Union walk away with the victory.
"This is definitely a tough loss for us" said head coach Michele Durand. "We will use this game as a learning experience for the rest of the season. Mount Union is one of the best teams in the conference and we were with them the whole game."
Northern's defense was strong all day forcing 32 turnovers.
Rose finished the game with 19 points. LaMattina added 17 points and Pohovey had 13 points and six rebounds before fouling out.
The Polar Bears will be in action again on Wednesday when they travel to Muskingum. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
