Tea Party protest planned for September in Kenton

By Virginia Bandy
Ada Herald Editor

Michael Shepherd, owner of Michael Angelo's Pizza in Kenton, approached the county commissioners last week to hold a Common Sense Tea Party around the Courthouse Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 26.

Shepherd noted that both businesses and private citizens want to participate in the Tea Party, a peaceful protest. According to Shepherd, some are "upset with where the country is headed...the government is growing but not listening to us." Shepherd noted that while the protest is non-partisan, there are a few Republicans who are interested in the cause, along with the Independents and Libertarians.

Shepherd hopes their message will be heard by local, state and federal officials. He said that Representative Jim Jordan has been invited to speak at the event. "He's the only one we like and has our confidence," Shepherd said.

"The goal is to educate people and wake them up," Shepherd said. Copies of the book "5,000 Year Leap" and a pocket version of the United States Constitution will be distributed.

Commissioner chairman Ed Elliott said that the commissioners don't need to give permission for the protest, but noted that the event should not be staged near the north side of the courthouse due to the gardens. He suggested either the east or west side of the courthouse. He also recommended that Shepherd speak with city officials in case a permit is needed.
