Soroptimist International of Kenton gives out awards
Soroptimist International of Kenton/Hardin County held their Celebration of Women Tea on Sunday, March 22 at Walnut Grove Church. The attendees were treated to a deeply moving performance from Faith that Sticks from the Church of the Nazarene. The group is comprised of elementary and middle school children and directed by Bret and Amy Bahr.

Co-presidents Jann Oglesbee and Bev Bahr hosted the annual event. District II Director Missie Austin shared a poem entitled Sisters. Governor Elect Cheryl Fouts from Gahanna shared some of her experiences and what Soroptimist means to her.

Hope Myers presented the Women's Opportunity award to Dawn Garner a double major in Political Science and Organizational Communication at Ohio Northern University. A mother of six, she is a member of the Communication Club, the International Honor Society; she is on the Dean's list and won the highest GPA award in Political Science. The Women's Opportunity Awards program was established in 1972 to assist women with primary financial responsibility for their families to obtain the skills training and education necessary to improve their employment status and standard of living for themselves and their family. The women receiving these financial awards may use them for any costs associated with their educational efforts, including tuition, books, child care, and transportation.

The Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award is a recognition program for young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer action within their communities or schools. The award is given to young women whose activities make the community and world a better place. Robin Carrig presented the award to Hannah Hardin a student at Ridgemont High School. She volunteers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus every Friday. She also volunteers with Ridgemont Music Boosters, Community Theatre groups and Salvation Army. She plans to attend Ohio Northern University in the fall.

Megan Brown from Bryan, Ohio was the recipient of The Virginia Wagner Educational Grant. The grant is named for Dr. Virginia Wagner of Indianapolis to commemorate her interest in higher education for women. Marie Sprang presented the award to Megan. A biology major, she currently attends Ohio Northern University where she is also active with Habitat for Humanity, Northern Christian Fellowship and Beta Beta Beta Biological Honorary.

Making a Difference for Women Award honors a woman who has worked to improve the lives of women and girls through her professional or volunteer work. The program begins at the local level where clubs recognize a woman in their community. Ruth Ann Cook presented the award to Kathy Oliver for the numerous activities she has been involved with since coming to Hardin County as an extension educator to include Hardin Leadership.

Oglesbee read the accomplishments of a club member and then revealed the Outstanding Soroptimist for 2009. Bev Bahr, a member since 1985, was presented a tea cup of yellow roses and a certificate for her continued commitment to the club.

Desserts, salads, and fellowship were shared by all immediately following the presentations.
