AKRON, Ohio (AP) - As it marks Veterans Day, a northeast Ohio school district is awarding a posthumous diploma for a man who was drafted into the military for World War II and died in Germany in 1944.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports Harold L. Lytle was drafted before graduating from Norton High School in 1943. The Purple Heart recipient died during the storming of a German village and was buried in a cemetery in nearby Belgium.

Fellow veterans Joe Nedoh and Donald Verhotz were part of Lytle's high school class and say he deserves the honor of finally being considered a graduate. The 87-year-old Verhotz says he asked the school district about the diploma after reading about Lytle on a website.

Lytle was to be honored during a school assembly.
