ADA - Bulldog senior right-hander Austin Cobb struck out 10 and hurled a complete game 3-0 victory over county rival Hardin Northern Monday evening at the frigid Ada Park.
Cobb gave up just two hits to the Polar Bears as the Bulldogs start 1-0 while dropping HN to 0-1.
Ada plated the only run the shutout-twirling Cobb would need in the bottom of the first inning when they scored on an error.
The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the second when junior Cory Kellum came home on a passed ball.
In the fourth, Ada put runners on the corners. On a sacrifice bunt, the Bulldogs plated their final run on a delayed dash from third base after the initial throw went to first base.
Ada missed adding to their lead when another bunt and a grounder caught baserunners in a rundown in successive plays.
Cobb mowed the Bears down in order in the top of the fifth, striking out the first two batters and getting the third out on a grounder to shortstop that barely beat the runner.
In the bottom of the fifth Ada junior Ben Neville singled and stole second. He then moved up to third base on a fielding error by the HN first baseman, who he dropped a routine throw.
But he was cut down at home trying to score on a bunt. Senior Gabe Sutton reached on a fielder's choice but was stranded.
Ada senior right fielder Mason Acheson showed off his throwing arm when he cut down a Bear runner at first on a liner to right field. Cobb then struck out the last two batters to post his first win of 2013.
Staff ace Cobb led the team with four pitching victories in 2012.
