ADA - Vera J. Helser, 88, passed away at 1:28 a.m., on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima. She was born in Hardin County to Jackson Brice and Gracie Fay (Long) Nelson who preceded her in death.
Verda worked as a bookkeeper and clerk at Mertz's Hardware and the Village Hardware for 32 years. She was an active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ of Ada. She was a chorister, served on the church board, was a Deaconess and Church Elder, Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and worked in the church whenever needed. Verda was a volunteer helper for several individuals. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #185 Ladies Auxiliary; past member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #6; a 1944 graduate of Ada High School; and a member of Ada Senior Citizens.
Surviving are two sons, Charles A. (Chris) Helser, of Laramie, Wyo., and Nolan D. (Anita) Helser, of Aurora, Colo.; one grandson, Brian Jason (Tammy) Helser, of Imperial, Neb.; one great-grandson, Trace Charles Helser, also of Imperial, Neb.; and three nieces. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Madeline Dally; and one brother, Willis A. Nelson.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Ada. Pastor Ron Briggs will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Ada. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., on Monday Sept. 3, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
