HARROD - Phillip Allen Hughes, 69, passed away at 2:25 p.m., on Jan. 25, 2013, at his residence in Harrod. He was born May 31, 1943, in Harrod, to Weiser E. "Bud" and Vida E. (Smith) Hughes. On May 29, 1961, he married Diana L. Wheeler, who survives.

He is also survived by three sons, Allen L. (Marcy) Hughes, Douglas L. (Paula) Hughes, and Dana J. Hughes; one daughter, Dena D. (Duane) Hedrick; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Mike) Bailey, Zachary Hughes, Chad and Chase Hughes, Christian, Cameron & Caden Hedrick; and two brothers, Loren G. (Kay) Hughes, and Dennis N. (Vicki) Hughes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas H. Hughes; and a sister, Patricia M. Simpson.

Phillip was the owner of Hughes Plumbing and Heating, Harrod, for more than 50 years, retiring in 2010.

He was a member of the Harrod Christian Church, and also was a member of Harrod Fire Department and Harrod City Council for over 25 years. He was a life member of the Auglaize Township Historical Society. He was one of the founders of the Allen East Community Center. He was a life member of the Safari Club International, where he was one of the founders of the Northwest Ohio Chapter, serving several years on its Board of Directors.

When he was younger, he worked in the sheep business with his father and brothers. He won several State and National sheep shearing contests. He later judged sheep shearing at area county fairs. He enjoyed hunting, shooting and fishing. Phillip went on four African safaris and he was very proud of his trophy room. His safari collection is now on display at Clymer's Wildlife Museum, in Columbus Grove, and at Dunham's Sports ,in Lima. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Funeral Rites for Mr. Hughes were held 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Auglaize Bible Church, Harrod, with Pastors Christian Wright and Gary Rummel officiating. Burial followed in Salem Cemetery, Westminster.
