ADA - Mary J. VanAtta, 80, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at 4:43 p.m., at her residence in Ada. She was born Oct. 29, 1932, in Saginaw, Mich., to the late Bert E. and Frances A. (Portwine) Francisco. On Nov. 10, 1951, she married Lloyd C. VanAtta and he survives in Ada.

Mary worked at Ohio Northern University, Ada Exempted Village Schools, and was a successful realtor. She was a 1950 graduate of Alpena High School.

Mary, along with Lloyd, raised their family and built a life on the farm. They were well known for their gardens and shared their harvests with many. Mary was also known for her cooking and entertaining skills. There was always a good meal waiting at her table. She was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church and Sugar Grove United Methodist Women. Her generous spirit was displayed by volunteering for Lima Memorial Health System and Hardin County Hospice, of Kenton.

Survivors also include one son, Bradley VanAtta, of Ada; three daughters, Kay (John) Rettig, of Ada, Christine VanAtta, of Columbus, and Catherine (Steve) Decker, of London, Ohio; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three special grandsons; and seven special great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, David Rainey; and one brother, Burton Francisco.

A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Rev. Jonathan Hanover officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m., in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada. Friends may call two hours prior to the service from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada.
