COLRAIN, Mass. - Lowell E. Umphress, 81, died Dec. 6, 2012, at Bay State Hospital in Greenfield, Mass. He was born May, 3, 1931, the son of George and Lucille (Epley) Umphress, who were lifelong residents of Ada. He is survived by his wife, Janet Harrod, also of Ada, whom he married in 1952.

Lowell was a 1949 graduate of Ada High School. He worked at the Ada Herald until he served in the US Marine Corps in Korea during the Korean War. He graduated from Ohio State University of Columbus, in 1957, with a degree in Business Administration and was hired by General Electric Company in Coshocton, Ohio. Several years later, he joined Decotone, a division of Litton Industries, in Westminster, Mass., and he and his family moved to Massachusetts. He was later made Division President and retired in 1991. He resided in Ashby, Mass., until moving to Colrain, in 2006. Burial was in the East Colrain Cemetery.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Catherine Umphress Gallo; a son, Stephen Umphress; a grandson, Stephen Gallo, all of Colrain. He is also survivied by a brother, Howard Umphress, of Ada; and a sister, Joyce Umphress Klatte, of Lewis Center, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Umphress and Maurice Umphress, both of Ada.
