LIMA - Guss Holbrook, 95, formerly of Harrod, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at 8 p.m., at his residence in Lima. He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Bonanza, Ky., to the late George W. and Rachel (Music) Holbrook. His step-mother, Bertha Holbrook also preceded him in death. He first married Dorothy Gibson in April 1937 and she is deceased. He then married Betty Holbrook on Aug. 13, 1966, and she survives in Lima.

Guss retired from Clark Equipment after working as a sheet metal worker for 34 years. He was a Life Member of the Ada VFW Post 9381 and a member of the Disabled American Veterans, of Lima.

Guss was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in WWII, where he was in the 82nd Airborne. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifleman, American Service Medal, and the Victory Medal. Guss's favorite saying was "nobody had a better family" than he did.

Survivors include one daughter, Virginia (Miles) Shelton, of Kenton; eight sons, Bill (Cheryl) Holbrook, Bob (Sandy) Holbrook, Sam Holbrook, and Rob Holbrook, all of Lima, Jeff (Tracy) Holbrook, of Spencerville, Tony (Eva) Holbrook, of Harrod, John (Dawn) Holbrook, of Lima, and Warren (Stephanie) Holbrook, of Bluffton; one sister, Lillian Allen, of Lima; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ballard, Jake, Gale and James Holbrook; and three sisters, Eva Jean Butler, Letha Williams, and Naoma Lowe.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Pastor Dan Holbrook officiating. Burial will follow in Preston Cemetery, Alger. Graveside Military Service will be conducted by the Ada VFW Post 9381 Honor Guard. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 28, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, and until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
