TWINSBURG, Ohio - Dr. Donald J. Bettinger, 86, Retired Professor of Chemistry, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 6, 2013. He was born and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where the chairman of the chemistry department recommended him to be a member of the American Chemical Society at the age of 19. He earned a Masters Degree from the University of Cincinnati and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. He was a professor of chemistry at Davidson College, West Virginia University, Denison University and Ohio Northern University where he chaired the chemistry department and the science division.

Dr. Bettinger was a major mover in the establishment of the Lima Section of the ACS where he served as its first chairman. His final career years were spent serving the students at Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Ky. In 1991 he retired and moved to Florida where he served in nursing home and literacy ministries. He was a member of Bay Street Baptist Church, Eustis, and Fellowship Sunday School Class while in Florida. In 2000 he moved to Twinsburg, Ohio, and was a member of First Baptist Church, of Aurora.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Coralen B. Bettinger; daughters, Kathryn (Jerry) Kibler, of Ohio and Nancy (Craig) Shoulders, of North Carolina; son, Walter W. II (Teri), of California; 21 grandchildren (six by marriage); and four great-grandchildren with two more on the way. A son, John F. and sister Barbara preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Don's life will be held Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Aurora 79 E. Mennonite Rd. Aurora, Ohio, 44202.
