The Ohio Northern University music department will present the 34th annual Spring Band Festival at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, May 10, at 4 p.m.
The festival will include performances by the ONU Wind Orchestra and the ONU Symphonic Band. James Barnes will serve as the guest conductor for the event. In addition to Barnes' conducting, the performance highlight of the Spring Band Festival is the All-Ohio Honors Band, which is comprised of gifted instrumentalists from high schools across the state.
Barnes is a member of the theory-composition faculty at the University of Kansas, where he teaches orchestration and composition. He has published numerous concert band and orchestra pieces. His works have been performed in such distinguished venues as the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The world-famous Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra has recorded three CDs of his music, and he has been commissioned to compose works for all five of the major U.S. military bands.
Barnes is a two-time recipient of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association Ostwald Award for outstanding contemporary wind band music. Additionally, he has received the Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service to Music Medal and the Bohumil Makovsky Award for Outstanding College Band Conductors.
Spring Band Festival will include an energetic, colorful array of music. Barnes has composed three pieces for the Wind Orchestra, the Symphonic Band, and the All-Ohio Honors Band. The event will conclude with the entire ensemble of musicians joining to play "America the Beautiful" and "Stars and Stripes Forever."
The ONU Wind Orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Thomas Hunt, chair of the department of music. Dr. Charles Bates, professor of music, will conduct the Symphonic Band, while Barnes will lead the All-Ohio Honors Band.
