ADA - Six very deserving Ada High School seniors each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Ada Lions Club Wednesday evening, April 24.

Elizabeth Butterfield (unable to attend), Ian Crabtree (Cincinnati Christian University - Youth Ministry), Erica Kier (Lehigh University - Bio Engineering), Levi Klingler (OSU or ONU - Mechanical Engineering), Mckenzie Shaw (University of Cincinnati - undecided), and Samantha Wildman (The Ohio State University - Hospital Administration) along with their parents were guests of the Ada Lions for a meal and awards presentation.

When these six students were in kindergarten in the year 2000, the Ada Lions Club made a modest commitment to make one $1,000 scholarship available annually to a deserving senior at Ada High School. The Ada Lions Club Scholarship program has grown beyond their wildest expectations. How they would raise the money was unknown at the time, but once committed the Ada Lions followed through, and thirteen years later, 52 Ada High School seniors have received a total of $49,000 in scholarships.

The Ada Lions have certainly made good on their promise. From a small beginning of selling several pallets of bagged landscaping mulch, the Ada Lions Club shoveled, raked, loaded and delivered their way to where they now are selling many semi-truck loads of mulch each year. With the coming of every spring season, just like a rite-of-passage, the Lions line up their dump trailers, donated for club use by two very generous Ada residents, pickup trucks, and bobcat loader and begin their deliveries throughout the area.

The Lions sell their mulch on Saturdays starting in April through the end of May, two and a half miles west of Ada on state route 81. Just look for the sign and the mountains of mulch. The brown mulch is $25 per bobcat scoop and the black mulch sells for $35 per bobcat scoop. Delivery is available for $10 in the Ada area and $20 in outlying areas. For more information or to schedule a delivery in support of this very worthwhile cause call Chad Hays at Hays Insurance in Ada 419-634-5626. The Ada Lions Club would like to thank all of those in the area that have supported them.
